Simon Pug Says

Monday, June 12, 2006

Another last ditch attempt by Gulliver kitty to hide from Simon pug. But Simon says "Oh yeah, well I can do that too!" and proceeded to find his own unique hiding place.

Here is one of my very favorite pictures of Simon pug. He was about 8 weeks old and just so tiny. When I clicked the picture he cocked his head just perfectly which he still does so often. This was one of the few times I could actually get him to sit still. He was (and is) such a little imp!! But he's my imp!

Whew, it's been too long since our last post. Lots of life changes going on right now. I am in the process of ending one job and beginning another at the moment which is incredibly stressful for me. I had my previous job for about 9 years so it's not easy for me to start something new. Simon's "dad" has recently moved out which has been hard on both Simon and I. Simon stayed with me but has been having some "behavioral problems" as of late. I don't know if it is the diet his is on or the lifestyle change for him that is making him so angry. He's been a bit of a beast. Other random personal and family issues have been working on me too which I won't go into but it's just been alot at once. I really want to start to post again on a regular basis because I love Simon and want to share our experiences with others. I know how much I enjoy reading about all of your "pug families". So stay tuned and hopefully you will be hearing from Simon and I soon!!

Here's chubby Simon pug. The diet is going well so far. Yeah, easy for me to say. I'm not the one eating low cal kibble daily. He begs constantly for anything we are eating. Even if I am in the kitchen cooking something, he comes running in because he can smell it. Poor baby, I do feel bad for him! I just want him to be healthy and with me for a long time. By the way, I know the harness looks tight. I've taken it off and loosened it since. I swear I'm not using it as some sort of puppy torture device.

Simon had a vet appointment today and we found out...that overweight. I feel so terrible and totally responsible. She (the vet) said he had "no waistline" and that he had "prominant buttcheeks". He weighs 24.4 pounds and I know that is big but I guess I didn't think it was too big. So he's on a diet. I bought the "healthy weight" dog food and have to quit mixing the soft food into the hard. No more soft food, peanut butter, or any of the yummies we give him. He also has a yeast infection in his right ear. Curses! Not a good day for Simon pug.

This as of late has become one of Simon's favorite basking spots. At the right time of the day, the sun shines in and it's nice and warm. The blanket too is super soft and he can sit and watch the traffic go by and lean up against the kushy pillow. So I can see why he loves it there. Actually the question I'm asking myself now is why is he sitting there and I am not?! Spoiled doggie!!

Can you spot Sasha kitty in this pic? She's learned not to make any sudden movements around Simon. Actually the only movement she makes around him is running...away from him (which I suppose is a bit sudden but all too necessary!)

"Are you talkin' to me?! I said you talkin' to ME?!!"
I've never been one to dress Simon in dog clothes but I got him a bandana today (which isn't really "clothes" I suppose) and had to post a pic of him. No bones about it, he's clearly one bad-ass doggie!

Gulliver kitty finds the cutest places to seek refuge from Simon pug. Any open drawer is fair game. Unfortunately my favorite clothing color is black and after Gulliver has napped on them, they look somewhat angora. Ehh, small price to pay for an awesome cat!

Simon has this thing where he constantly has to be underfoot regardless of where I may be. Yes this means he follows me into the bathroom when I need to "take care of buiness" if ya know what I'm saying. So I've come up with the plan that I put him into the bathtub were he cannot get out of yet he is still right there with me, sort of like a coach or even a cheerleader if you will. I must admit it was a bit unnerving at first, but it's surprising how fast one can get used to it. Some may think this is strange, possibly TMI, but in my household we like to call it "Party in the Bathroom"!!

This is as close as Sasha kitty likes to get to Simon. Any closer and she begins to panic. Mmrowww...

Can you pick out the "real Simon pug"?! Hmm...careful, he's a tricky pup!

Sunday, March 26, 2006

Because Gulliver kitty doesn't get nearly enough "air-time", I thought I'd post a nice shot of him that I took today. This is the window sill that he spends many hours on. It's right above the radiator so it's nice and warm and it's just high enough so that it's out of Simon's reach.

One of the only ways to keep Simon quiet and still is if I have a chewy bone in hand. So whenever I sit down on the couch I make sure that I have one on me. This picture makes me smile because it looks like I'm holding a microphone and he's ready to sing his portion of the duet?! He dances too ya know!

So Simon loooves the vacuum, I don't know why. I can't stand the damn thing. Whenever I turn on the vac he immediately runs into the room and starts running all over the place. He does the "pug scuttle" all around the coffee table. It's really cute! He got a little wound up the other day and when he gets really hyper he has a tendency to bite. Right now I have bruises all up and down my arms and all around my ankles from said biting. But we called a truce and called it a day with the vacuum.

It's funny because Simon hates getting baths yet when I am in the tub he's right there hanging out next to the tub with his paws on the edge. He jumps and jumps and up until today he couldn't jump into the tub. But today I was relaxing in the tub and he was there with me bouncing at the side when all of the sudden he bounced right in. I think it surprised us equally, we both just kinda sat there for a minute until we realized what exactly happened. So I scooped him up and dumped him out and he proceeded to track wet puppy paws all throughout the house. I proceeded to drain the water, draw more water and finish my relaxing bath....Simonless.

When Simon found out that yesterday was Grandpa Larry's birthday, he insisted on a party hat.

Sunday, March 12, 2006

We spent some time outside today and got some good shots of Simon.

Saturday, March 11, 2006

We like to call this Simon's "piranah mouth". He juts out his bottom row of teeth just like the fish does. I just can't be angry at him when he looks at me like this.

Thursday, March 09, 2006

We decided to act silly tonite and played dress-up with simon and a dishtowel. Isn't he pretty? Oh he got his revenge. Later we found a "surprise" on the hallway rug. I will refrain from posting a picture of said "surprise" as I wouldn't want to embarass Simon.

I took this picture of Simon yesterday and fell in love with it. It is so very representitive of him and his personality. He's so light and goofy most of the time but some days he can be a grouch and his dark side shows. I guess we're all pretty much like that though aren't we?!

Monday, March 06, 2006

I told Simon a joke tonite and he laughed and laughed!!

So Simon loves his chewy bones. I got him a couple of new ones today and took some shots of him going to town on 'em. Some of his faces are fabulous. You can tell he's really working hard, or maybe he's just cheesing for the camera?!

Saturday, March 04, 2006

Simon goes nuts when it gets close to dinner time. He cannot and will not stand still. As we prepare his meal, he bounces around the kitchen, jumping back and forth, from one side to the other in hopes of a tiny fallen morsel.

This is what we like to call Simon's interpretive dance. He usually does a couple of spins before he finds the exact right spot. Then he liiiifffttss the leg and lets loose. He raises his leg so high sometimes that he actually loses his balance and stumbles. Then we have to start all over. I was hoping that since we got him fixed at a fairly early age that he wouldn't develop some of the bad habits males have, such as the leg lift. Unfortunately....

I like to take Simon downstairs when I am doing laundry in our building basement. He always has to beat me down the stairs, turn around, and wait for me. If I go down first, he will refuse to go down behind me. I have to acually go back up the stairs and then let him go down first. Same thing with going up the stairs. He's gotta be first. I like to think that this is because he loves me so much and wants to go first to protect me from whatever may be ahead of us but I've read that this is actually a dominance thing. He seems to think he is the "alpha dog". For such a small dog, he has a huge presence.

Sothe cats have been fairly stressed out lately, a large part of that is due to Simon pug. So I decided to give them a treat today. I put the dog in the other room and got out the catnip. Oh it was bliss for them. (See top 2 pics) They just totaly chilled and had so much fun--like they were kittens again. Rollin around, playin with toys, actually actin happy. But then (dun dun dunnnn...) Simon managed to get out and it was business as usual. The window sill standoff. Look at the way they are looking at him, it's classic.

We have 2 cats as well as Simon pug. Gulliver and Sasha have not responded well to their new housemate. Basically wherever he is, they aren't. They spend lots of time in tiny hiding places or in the highest point of any given room. Even after a year of cohabitation, the brood is in constant battle. The cats just want to be left alone and puppy just wants to play. It's really hard to watch sometime. Poor kitties!

Simon sleeps in a crate at night because it is impossible for him to settle down and fall asleep in bed with someone. Every morning he acts as my little alarm clock when I hear the pitter patter of his little feet tapping around outside the bedroom door. Sometimes he pokes his paws underneath the door and plays with my toes as I 'm getting ready for work. When I open the bedroom door, he prys his little head into the ajar door until he gets all the way in. He so loves me!

This is one of Simon's favorite activites. He loves to chew on pant legs. Yes, it can be very unnerving for the wearer of the pants and can be somewhat uncomfortable when we have company come, but maybe, just maybe, Simon knows something we don't know and pant legs actually taste like peanut butter. I've got some testing to do. I'll let you know.
